CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing
The effects of age, sun exposure, harsh weather, as well as repetitive facial movements all lead to eventual wrinkling of the facial skin. Lasers have become very popular and are known to be very effective in the fight against wrinkles and sun damaged skin. Laser skin resurfacing using the CO2 laser can offer many advantages. CO2 laser resurfacing is a procedure performed for the purpose of wrinkle improvement, facial skin tightening, acne scar improvement, or the treatment or removal of skin lesions. The carbon dioxide laser emits an intense beam of light that vaporizes a very thin layer of the abnormal skin surface. During the healing phase, healthier, more organized skin components are deposited, thus improving the appearance and health of the remaining skin. Additionally, the heat from the laser causes up to 25% shrinkage of the skin components, thus causing a tightening of the treated skin. New cells form and collagen increases as the tissues heal, revealing a smoother, tighter, younger-looking skin.
After laser treatment the skin will appear red like a deep sunburn. The redness will last for 7-10 days, or up to several months depending on your skin type and healing. The skin will continue to improve as new cells, collagen and elastin increases. The procedure is ideal for men and women alike and is good for fair and olive skins. Darker skins should be discussed with the surgeon. A private consultation is the best way to evaluate your skin characteristics to decide if laser resurfacing is right for you, or if other skin rejuvenation procedures such as chemical peeling would be best.
