Thyroid Nodule Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)
A scar-free, minimally invasive treatment for benign thyroid nodules
Thyroid nodules are extremely common and can cause symptoms such as neck fullness, difficulty swallowing, or visible enlargement. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is an advanced, nonsurgical treatment that shrinks problematic thyroid nodules without removing your thyroid gland. Our practice offers this state-of-the-art alternative to surgery for appropriately selected patients.
What is Thyroid RFA?
Radiofrequency ablation uses thermal energy delivered through a small needle to precisely target thyroid nodule tissue. The treated nodule gradually shrinks over the following months, relieving symptoms and improving appearance. The procedure is performed in the office using local anesthesia.
No incision. No stitches. No general anesthesia.
Who is a candidate?
You may be a candidate for thyroid RFA if you have:
✔ A benign thyroid nodule confirmed by biopsy
✔ Symptoms of neck fullness and/or difficulty swallowing
✔ Cosmetic concerns from a visible lump
✔ Growth of a previously benign nodule
✔ A desire to avoid surgery or lifelong thyroid medication
A consultation and ultrasound evaluation will determine if this treatment is right for you.
Why choose radiofrequency ablation for my nodule?
Thyroid RFA allows patients to avoid the risks and recovery associated with surgery.
What should I expect during the procedure?
The area is numbed with local anesthesia. Using ultrasound guidance, a small electrode is inserted into the nodule. Energy is applied in a controlled fashion to treat the tissue while protecting nearby structures. Most procedures take about 60-90 minutes. Patients typically return to normal activity within a day.
What is recovery like and when will I see results?
Mild soreness or swelling for a few days is common. Nodules gradually shrink over time, with most patients seeing significant reduction within 2–6 months, and continued improvement beyond that.
Is RFA safe?
When performed by experienced specialists, thyroid RFA has been shown to be very safe and effective. Serious complications are uncommon. We take extensive precautions, including continuous ultrasound visualization, to protect your voice and surrounding structures.
Is this covered by insurance?
In most cases, thyroid RFA is covered by insurance for patients with symptomatic benign nodules. Coverage depends on your individual plan and medical history. Our staff will review your benefits, discuss any out-of-pocket costs, and obtain prior authorization on your behalf.
