Thyroid Nodule

Thyroid Nodule Evaluation & Biopsy

Finding out you have a thyroid nodule can feel stressful. The good news is that most thyroid nodules are benign and do not affect thyroid function. Modern evaluation allows us to determine quickly and safely whether any further treatment is needed.

Our specialists provide comprehensive in-office thyroid ultrasound and, when indicated, ultrasound-guided biopsy with comfort, precision, and efficiency.

What Is a Thyroid Nodule?

A thyroid nodule is a growth or lump within the thyroid gland. Nodules are common and often discovered:

  • During a routine physical exam
  • On imaging performed for another reason
  • When a patient notices swelling in the lower neck

While the majority are non-cancerous, proper evaluation is important to rule out malignancy and guide next steps.

What to Expect at Your Visit

Comprehensive Ultrasound

If you do not already have a comprehensive ultrasound of your thyroid and lymph nodes, our office will first evaluate your thyroid gland with in-office high resolution ultrasound. This allows us to carefully examine the size, structure, and characteristics of the nodule(s). Depending on these findings, we will discuss next steps including monitoring or biopsy.

Ultrasound-Guided Fine Needle Aspiration

If a biopsy is recommended based off your ultrasound report, we often can perform an ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (FNA) during the same visit. Same-day biopsy availability depends on your specific insurance coverage and our ability to review your imaging.
This procedure is usually:

✔ Quick – usually completed in minutes
✔ Well tolerated – minimal discomfort
✔ No incision or stitches
✔ No downtime

Most patients return to normal activities immediately.

Understanding Your Results

Biopsy results are usually available within 1-2 weeks. Once received, we will contact you promptly to review findings and discuss whether you need:

  • Observation with periodic ultrasound
  • Additional molecular testing
  • Surgery or minimally invasive procedures

We guide you every step of the way.

When Should a Nodule Be Evaluated?

You should schedule an assessment if you have:

  • A newly discovered thyroid nodule
  • Growth of a known nodule
  • Voice changes or swallowing difficulty
  • A family history of thyroid cancer
  • Prior radiation exposure to the neck
